Bayer CropScience more than crop protection
Rodney Schmidt maintains that Bayer CropScience may be misunderstood. He says the company is primarily thought of as a crop protection provider, which it is, but he says Bayer is also heavily into biotechnology. His case in point is Bayer’s Liberty Link soybeans. Just a couple of years since their U.S. introduction, Schmidt says well [...]

Iowa Farm Bureau: Eliminate direct payments
Direct payments to farmers should be eliminated in favor an improved revenue insurance program and a contribution to federal deficit reduction.  A resolution to that effect was passed by Iowa Farm Bureau delegates at their summer policy conference Friday.  “What we did was left the policy open saying we’ll remove the direct payments, but if [...]

Missouri Fox Trotters show this week
They’re identified by their diagonal gait. Missouri Fox Trotting horses are bred to deliver a smooth ride and their world show lasts a full week beginning September 4 in Ava, Missouri. To call Cecil Huff an enthusiast of the breed would be to short-sell the man. He describes the breed with a fair warning: to [...]

Feedlot operators are expected to price cattle higher
The cash cattle trade was dead on Friday with business completed for the week. All trade volume totals were rather light in the South. Aggressive chain speed through the week indicates that country movement remained more than adequate; packers will start the week with better margins, but eager to learn of Labor Day meat case [...]

Grains and oilseeds sharply higher on demand, yield concerns
Soybeans were sharply higher, hitting new two and a half week highs on technical and speculative buying, along with spillover from wheat and corn. The trade continues to keep an eye on yield estimates with Allendale’s projection down and Informa’s up from USDA’s most recent guess. The USDA’s next supply and demand update is out [...]

Lack of Colombia FTA hurting U.S. farmers
The lack of progress on the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement is having a devastating impact on U.S. corn, soybean and wheat exports to that South American country.
